Total, Careem collaborate on road safety campaign in Egypt

CAIRO, May 15, 2017

Global energy group Total and Careem, a leading app-based car booking service in the region, have signed an agreement launching a joint road safety campaign in Egypt spanning multiple activations to raise awareness, contributing to safer roads.

The Total-Careem road safety initiative - launching in Cairo and Alexandria as a first phase - will share safety enhancing tips via social media, outdoor and radio platforms, said a statement from the company.

Total will sponsor Careem’s mobile application and run promotions customised for Careem users at Total stations and Bonjour shops, it said.

Total customers will also enjoy free Careem rides through promotional codes, it added.

According to the Central Agency for Mobilization and Statistics (Capmas) and the World Health Organization report issued in 2015 on the mortality rate from car accidents, Egypt ranked 16th in the Arab world and 109th globally out of 180 countries with 12.8 deaths per 100,000 people.

Human error represented 64 per cent of the causes of road accidents in 2015, followed by the technical condition of the vehicle with 21.9 per cent, and road conditions at 2.4 per cent, it said.

Private cars caused the highest number of accidents at 36.8 per cent, followed by transport vehicles at 27.8 per cent, and finally taxis at 18.9 per cent, it stated.

Ian Lepetit, managing director, Total Egypt, said: “As one of the main automotive industry players in Egypt, it is our role to help enhance the safety of passengers on the road in any way we can.”

“Safety is one of our company’s core values, it is part and parcel of everything we do. We adhere to strict safety standards as part of our health safety, environment, and quality management system which applies to all work processes, including road transportation,” he said.

“We are very happy to partner with Careem, a rising star on Egypt’s roads, to make a positive difference by improving road safety in Egypt and enhancing the services provided to our customers for a much better commute,” he added.

Ramy Kato, head of Careem Egypt operations and vice president of Careem Care, said: “We are very serious about promoting road safety. Our captains have to complete a number of tests to ensure their compliance with our company’s international criteria before joining our network.”

“In addition, all our cars undergo stringent checks to provide our customers with a seamless and hassle-free experience that ultimately offers the best transportation option to our customers,” he added.

“We are delighted to work with a global leader like Total on such a great initiative. This is an obligation we are committed to and one that also allows us to continuously enhance our customers’ experience,” Kato concluded. – TradeArabia News Service
